Stem Cell Therapy

In many cases of spinal or joint tissue damage, physical therapy, chiropractic care, anti-inflammatory medication and even drastic surgical procedures are not enough to repair the injury and return the body to its previous state. Stem cell injection therapy is a revolutionary technique using non-controversial Adult (non-embryonic) stem cells to regenerate damaged tissue and help the body recover naturally within weeks.

Dr. Damon Noto is one of the few doctors in the New York City area performing this revolutionary procedure. Approximately 86% of patients surveyed who have undergone PRP or stem cell therapy report being satisfied with their treatment and say that they would do it again.

Please note that patients with active cancers and/or infections are not candidates for PRP and stem cell therapy. NSAID users will be required to suspend their medication several days before their injections and for 2 days afterward.

Stem cells are the body’s “repairmen” – when directed to the site of an injury or a damaged tissue area, these parent cells can develop into any kind of cell that the body needs to repair the damage and help heal the injury. The stem cells used by Spine & Joint Center are mesenchymal stem cells harvested from the patient’s own body and are not of embryonic origin.

Advances in regenerative medicine have enabled us to use the healing factors within our own blood to decrease pain, improve function and regenerate meniscal tears, rotator cuff tendonitis, and hip osteoarthritis. We spin down the extracted blood to obtain the powerful building cells that regrow tissue and heal chronic tears and cartilage loss. All of this is done with injections of these materials into the joints themselves. In severe cases we now have the option of combining arthroscopic surgery with stem cell therapy to produce excellent results.

In your first appointment, we will perform an evaluation to determine the best way to obtain the stem cells from your body. In our second appointment, we will extract the stem cells, and then do the actual injection. Dr. Noto will inject concentrated stem cells into the joint or spinal injury either using mild sedation or local anesthesia. The procedure time is under two hours. You will experience minimal discomfort and quick recovery time.

Tissue typically takes between 2 and 3 months to repair itself, but most patients notice a change in their symptoms within six to eight weeks. While the total number of injections required may vary depending on age and the type and severity of the condition, most patients require 2-4 sets of injections spaced apart.

Yes! Stem cell therapy can treat disc annular tears, disc bulges/protrusions and disc herniations. In cases where the disc herniation is very large or the disc is very damaged we offer the option of minimally invasive spinal decompression and repair and combine that procedure with either PRP or stem cells. The effect is often synergistic and in many cases very powerful. We are now at a stage where we can offer patients alternatives to spinal surgery or back surgery.

The downside of traditional spine surgery is that you often loss range of motion after surgery or create a substantial amount of scar tissue. This does not happen when we use regenerative treatments to treat disc problems either in the lumbar or cervical region. Additionally, even if the disc problem is treated successfully it often places increased stress on the disc either below or above the level of surgery or fusion. In the future this can cause that disc to degenerate and even lead to a disc herniation.
